Let’s be honest: the hoodie has come a long way. Sports apparel brand Champion takes credit for inventing the piece of clothing back in the 1930s to shield athletes from the elements while training in miserable weather. It eventually made its way into the hip hop and skateboard cultures. Since then, the hoodie has been a mainstay in the closets of angst teenagers everywhere. Now it has become ubiquitous and can even be worn with a business suit as long as you know how to pull it off correctly. Confused on how to wear a hoodie? Here are several ways to work it into your wardrobe without looking like a college dropout without direction.
Layer on Layer on Layer
In this instance, the hoodie is a part of the supporting cast instead of the star of the show. This is one of the simplest ways to incorporate a hoodie into your wardrobe. Pair a zip-up hoodie with a crewneck t-shirt and a jacket or coat, jeans and a pair of clean sneakers. For those who want to keep it ultra-basic, there’s few wardrobe pairings that work as well as the leather jacket and hoodie do.
Do you think you’re bold enough to pull off wearing a hoodie with a business suit? As head of River Island’s Style Studio Giles Farnahm puts it, “Sure, a hoodie teamed with a pair of straight-leg jeans and sneakers is a tried and tested combination that just works. But if you’re looking to sharpen up, try layering under an unstructured suit for an outfit that rips up the traditional rule book.”
To really rip up the rule book, try a mid-weight hoodie in a cool color (navy, grey, etc.) with a charcoal grey suit. Instead of wing tipped shoes swap them out with a pair of white sneakers. If you’re eager to try the smart yet casual mix but the business suit/hoodie combo is a bit too risqué, pair a neutral colored hoodie with a pair of tailored trousers and luxe sports shoes. If you really want to live life on the edge, try a patterned trousers such as plaid or pinstripe.
Comfy Yet Cool
The athleisure look is in whether you actually work out or not. However, now you don’t have to look like you just came from the gym. To pull off this look, simply wear a hoodie with a pair of fitted joggers and some leather kicks. Now you are good to go.
Here are some quick Do’s and Don’ts to remember when choosing which hoodie to wear with what outfit.
– Don’t go digging in the crates for one of your old hoodies from college. The fabrics, colors and styles have changed since then, and you don’t want to run the risk of looking like you’re back in college.
– Do opt for a pullover hoodie over a zipped one when going for the smart, casual yet business look.
– Do look for a fitted hoodie because they will always trump an oversized one.
– Don’t chase trends if you plan on keeping that hoodie in rotation for more than one season. Look for a classic, soft to the touch hoodie in a neutral color that can hold up to the test of time.
